Double Chevron Stitch

Double Chevron Stitch is a decorative variation of the classical Chevron Stitch. The embroidery method is straightforward—first, you embroider the first row of the Chevron stitch. Then you add another layer of the Chevron stitch, which intertwines with the first to create a mesmerizing decorative bar.

You can embroider this stitch in a single color for a decorative texture. On the other hand, you can play with colors and create original designs. While two shades of the same color will result in nuanced color work, two contrasting colors will make a bold design choice and serve as an accent for the entire embroidery.

On the reverse side, Double Chevron Stitch appears as two parallel rows of Backstitch in two colors

Applications of the Double Chevron Stitch

This decorative variation of the Chevron technique works great for borders and frames. You can work it in straight or slightly bent lines.

The double chevron technique looks gorgeous on the garments. For example, with this needlework technique, you can decorate cuffs and necklines, or add decorative trims to the edges of garments and home textiles.

Besides that, Double Chevron Stitch lends itself to filling. Position rows of the Double Chevron close together to create a textural, semi-covering surface that will look great in any needlework design.

How to embroider Double Chevron Stitch

Step-by-step hand embroidery tutorial

1. To start, mark two parallel lines for guidance. First, embroider a row of the Chevron stitch. Begin with a short horizontal stitch on the top mark. Pull the thread to the back, but leave a small loop open.

2. Now, push the needle back to the surface in the middle of the stitch you just made. Then, pull the thread to the surface and tighten the loop.

3. After that, make a diagonal stitch to the lower marking line.

4. Take the needle up to the left. Make a horizontal stitch to the right. Make sure that the end of the diagonal stitch sits centrally between these two points. Pull the thread to the back, but leave a small loop open.

5. Get the needle back up at the same spot where the diagonal stitch ended. Pull the thread and tighten the horizontal stitch.

6. Make a diagonal stitch in the top-right direction, and repeat the steps to create a zigzag shape with a horizontal stitch at the angle.

7. Move in a zigzag trajectory and repeat the steps to embroider the entire row of Chevron stitch.

8. To make it a Double Chevron Stitch, add a second layer. I used a lighter blue thread, but you can use a contrasting color or the same thread if your design requires it. Start with the same horizontal stitch, but this time, you make it on the lower marking line.

9. Then, push the needle back to the surface in the middle of the stitch and tighten the stitch.

10. Now, pass the needle under the first diagonal stitch of the first layer of the chevrons. Note how this creates an intertwined look of the Double Chevron Stitch.

11. Use the same embroidery technique to create an angle with a horizontal top on the upper marking line.

12. Make a diagonal stitch to the right. This time, the diagonal stitch goes over the first layer of chevrons.

13. Remember that the next stitch passes under the first layer of stitches.
