Double Cretan Stitch
The Double Cretan Stitch is a decorative variation of the classical Cretan Stitch. To achieve this laced band effect, we embroider the Cretan Stitch twice, layering the stitches in an alternating manner and lacing them together.
On the reverse side, this embroidery technique creates two lines of vertical stitches. In the two colored version, the stitches are of alternating colors.
Applications of the Double Cretan Stitch
The Double Cretan Stitch is handy for stitching decorative bands, embellishing the cuffs or necklines of garments, or creating bold borders in modern surface embroidery.
This technique will look great on straight lines, but you can also apply it on curves and angles.
Use a single color of the thread for a decorative lace effect or mix two contrasting colors for an intricate, interlaced effect. You can also opt for metallic or silky threads or add beads to the mix for luxurious embellishments.

How to embroider Double Cretan Stitch
Step-by-step hand embroidery tutorial
1. Mark four parallel lines to define the size and the position of your decorative band. Embroider a row of Cretan Stitch.
2. Finish the first row and secure the thread on the back.
3. Now, add a second – mirrored row of the Cretan Stitch above the first one. The first stitch goes above the previous row.
4. The second stitch goes under the previous row; therefore, pass the needle under the leg of the Cretan Stitch.
5. Then, make a stitch. This lacing of every second stitch will create an intertwined effect of the Double Cretan Stitch, rather than simple layering.
6. To create a two-colored Double Cretan Stitch, embroider the first row with one color and add a second row of Cretan Stitch with a contrasting color thread.
