Zigzag Stitch embroidery

Zigzag Stitch

The Zigzag stitch, a member of the Straight stitch family, is a hand embroidery technique used to create repetitive geometric patterns of cross stitches divided by vertical stitches.

This hand embroidery stitch is made in two steps. First, we stitch from left to right to make the zigzag line of vertical and diagonal stitches. Then, we add the second round of stitches. This time, we move from left to right and add another layer of diagonal stitches that cross the ones from the previous round and the second vertical stitch.

On the rear side of the embroidery, you will see a row of triple vertical stitches.

Applications of the Zigzag Stitch

The Zigzag stitch, with its unique ability to both decorate and reinforce edges, is a versatile technique. It’s perfect for adding a touch of elegance to borders and edging, making it a popular choice for embroidery on clothes and hand sewing.

Rows of Zigzag stitches, when worked close to each other, create a stunning repetitive textural filling. This unique effect can add depth and dimension to your embroidery.
