Zig Zag Coral Stitch
Zig Zag Coral Stitch is a decorative variation of Coral Stitch. The knots of the Coral stitch are positioned on two parallel lines and spaced in a zig-zag manner to create an ornamental band.
Applications of the Zig Zag Coral Stitch
Use this decorative hand embroidery technique to embroider borders, embellish garments and home textiles, couch the ribbon to the fabric, or for crazy quilting. You can also combine this embroidery technique with other stitches to create decorative bands.

How to embroider Zig Zag Coral Stitch
Step-by-step hand embroidery tutorial
- Make the first stitch
Mark two parallel lines on the fabric. Take the needle to the surface on the first line and lay your thread diagonally towards the second line. Keep the thread in tension and take the needle down through the fabric on one side of the laid thread.
- Make a loop
Bring the needle to the surface on the other side of the laid thread and up through the loop. Pull the thread to tighten the loop and form a knot.
- Start the second knot
Keep the thread in tension and take the needle down through the fabric on one side of the laid thread, on the second marked line.
- Make the second knot
Bring the needle to the surface on the other side of the laid thread and up through the loop. Pull the thread to tighten the loop and form a knot.
- Make the third knot
Repeat the steps to make one more knot on the first line.
- Add more knots
Move from one marked line to another and make Coral Stitch knots, following the same steps.
- Finish the line
You can adjust the density of the stitches and the angle of the zig-zag to fit your design best.
