Powdered Filling Stitches

Powdered filling stitches are hand embroidery techniques in which small, isolated stitches are scattered across an area of the needlework design, leaving much of the ground fabric visible. These stitches may be arranged in a regular pattern or placed more randomly for a natural, textured effect.

The density of the stitches can vary within the filled space. For example, you can make your stitches more concentrated toward the center and gradually more spaced toward the edges, or vice versa. This would create shading, express movement, and add visual depth.

Besides mixed density, the stitches may all face the same direction or be oriented differently to achieve a more varied and dynamic appearance.

Best examples of scattered fillings are Seed Stitch, Detached Chain stitch, and French knots.
