Filling stitches are hand embroidery techniques used to cover areas of a design. This embroidery type covers the ground fabric completely. These fill stitches create solid fields of color or texture. It allows the embroiderer to build depth, shading, and visual interest within a motif.
Because they are typically applied to broad sections of a pattern, these stitches help define shapes and give the design a more substantial, finished appearance.
Best know hand embroidery stitches from this group are Satin Stitch, Long and Short stitch or a Weave Stitch. But there are plenty more techniques that you can use to fill the spaces in your needlework design.
Filling stitches for hand embroidery can further be classified into Open filling stitches and Powdered fillings, depending on how well hand embroidery stitch covers the surface.
