Outline stitches are hand embroidery techniques used to define the edges of a design or to emphasize specific shapes within a motif. They create clear, continuous lines that frame an area, which can then be embellished with filling stitches, additional decorative techniques, or even colored with fabric paint. By providing structure, contrast, and visual clarity, embroidery stitches for contours guide the viewer’s eye and enhance the overall composition.
Additionally, outlining the shapes can be beneficial for creating raised or padded shapes that you will later fill with stitches.
Traditional hand embroidery techniques for basic contours are Stem Stitch, Split Stitch, and Chain Stitch. Note that, in addition to basic stitches, you can use more decorative techniques, such as the Pekinese Stitch or the Whipped Back stitch, for ornamental borders and outlines.
Another application of outline stitches is to use them for lettering. Most of the stitches from this category will work great as a lettering medium.
